The problem is with how their characters are played. Will Farrell and Chris Kattan definitely have good chemistry. They lust after one night in the hottest club in town, The Roxbury. They can't get in the clubs and when they do, they are lousy with the women. Sounds like fun, but the problem is that they fail at both. Instead, the two spend their time hitting on every woman they see and going clubbing at night. Their father owns a floral shop and wants them to work hard for the family business. Two brothers Doug and Steve still live with their parents. I like the whole idea of it, what with the clubbing, loser brothers, but the execution is just off, as it is often with ridiculous comedies like this. I'm not saying that I like it, but I can find a lot more humor in it than I once could.
That being said, over the years I have accrued more appreciation for the film. If you're a Will Ferrell fan, check this out. However, this isn't the greatest of SNL films that honor belongs to Wayne's World 1 and 2. Compared to later SNL films, this is among the few that are funny. A decent laugh fest that is harmless fun, A Night at the Roxbury makes you laugh, and is quite underrated. But this was made back when he was funny and his career was just warming up. This is the type of film that he made that actually was funny. I enjoyed the ridiculousness of this film, and thought that the leads were pretty good.
For what it is, it's a mindless comedy with decent laughs. Though not perfect, it is a funny flick and is one of those films that should be watched with friends. As far as a film based on a skit from SNL is concerned, this is one of the better films. Although this isn't a memorable comedy, it is lots of fun. The film provides you with mild laughter, and it works.
The film is quite simple in its execution. The film is fun to watch, and is the only watchable Chris Kattan film. A Night at the Roxbury is one of the first Will Ferrell films that I first saw, and I thought it was a pretty decent comedy.
